About the conference

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Commission of Press Studies within the Social Sciences Section of the Cracow Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). The year 2022 also marks the 25th birthday of the Commission’s academic periodical, the Yearbook of the History of Polish Press, published jointly by the PAN and the Pedagogical University of Cracow.

As part of the celebration of the two anniversaries the Commission of Press Studies of the PAN (Cracow Branch) and the Institute of Information Science at the Pedagogical University of Cracow will host an International Research Conference „The Press versus the Book: Competition to Convergence” on 24-25th November 2022.

The honorary patrons of the conference are Professor Piotr Borek, Rector of the Pedagogical University of Cracow and Professor Andrzej Jajszczyk, President of the Cracow Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The aim of the Conference is to provide an interdisciplinary platform for discussions of the condition  of the traditional mass media (the press and books) in the age of technological revolution; presentations of new tendencies and research illuminating the co-existence and competition of the old and the new media within a historical perspective; a reassessment of the way the way the balance between the two has been impacted by changes in information processing and communication; and an evaluation of the analyses of the traditional and the convergent media consumer.

Conference themes:

  1. transformations of the press and book market, both in quantitative and qualitative terms, driven by competition, in Poland and globally, within a historical perspective and currently;
  2. strategies of press and book publishers in Poland and in other countries, as part of historical and contemporary contexts;
  3. intermedial and intramedial completion: books, the press, new technologies;
  4. marketing tools (advertising and distribution) used in targeting a specific content consumer/user as n element and marker of competitiveness (in Poland and in other countries, as part of historical and contemporary contexts)
  5. new audience-focused communication strategies implemented by press and book publishers (in Poland and in other countries, as part of historical and contemporary contexts)

Selected papers from the Conference will be published in the „Yearbook of the History of Polish Press” (70 points) and „Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis Studia ad Bibliothecarum Scientiam Pertinentia” (70 points). The selection will be carried out by a specially appointed Conference Research Council.
